What is Plain Talk about Literacy and Learning?

Plain Talk about Literacy and Learning is heralded as the nation’s premier literacy Institute. The Institute gained its reputation because of its clear focus on providing evidence-based reading research and strategies for those who teach at all ages and grade levels.

From the nation’s leading researchers, you will learn the current findings on reading instruction, reading difficulties and reading intervention.

From seasoned practitioners, learn classroom strategies that put this knowledge to work.

Dr. Mary Dahlgren will be presenting

Building a Sound Wall for Reading and Spelling Purposes

(High-Yield Teaching Strategies and Tactics, ELL, Early Childhood, At-Risk Students, Dyslexia and Other Learning Issues)

Explaining and teaching the articulatory features of phonemes is a critical piece that is often overlooked by teachers of beginning readers. In this session, we will build a sound wall that leads to more in-depth conversations on the comparisons and contrasts of phonemes, the challenges second language learners face, and how to link this information to orthographic patterns in English. Learn about differentiating between a phoneme, a letter, and a grapheme while building a bridge to orthographic awareness. Teachers of Spanish speakers will benefit from this instruction by learning about the comparisons and contrasts between Spanish and English phonemes.

Mark Seidenberg will also be there as a Thought Leader!

Mark Seidenberg is the author of the book "Language at the Speed of Sight"

"A good and worthwhile read for anyone interested in the future of education for our children."

-Mary Dahlgren
